Own an Original from Huset
By Kate Cole
Behind Huset, meaning ‘the house’ in Danish, are the Parnham brothers, Ryan, Charlie and Brett. Founded in 2012 in Melbourne’s South East, Huset is now bringing original Scandanavian designs to the area from their thousand square metre showroom/warehouse in Cheltenham.
Huset stocks only original designs. The majority of their furniture is sourced from Europe and stock is refreshed each month with new products and ranges from overseas and Australia. Designers include renowned brands such as TON, Normann Copenhagen and Brokis, and work from designers such as Alex Gufler, Mads Johansen and Tom Kelley. The brothers are also extending their range by taking on contemporary designers and producing their ranges under licence. Huset also hosts local pop-up guests and artists in-store, making their shop-front a hub for local creatives.
The three brothers bring different skill sets to the business; Ryan is from a design and tech background, while Charlie and Brett manage sales and manufacturing. “It’s all about what we like to look at, who we like to deal with and what we are proud to represent”, says Ryan, of the motivation behind Huset. The brothers have taken numerous trips to Europe to make personal connections with their suppliers and, “we are very pleased to be able to call them our friends”, says Ryan. This personal relationship strongly influences their aesthetic choices. “We give feedback about trends we like and receive products based on the trends our partners are following” says Ryan. “It ends up producing diverse styles, surprises, spontaneity and the occasional failure… but that’s all part of the fun!”
The Parnham brothers place a significant focus on communicating with their designers, and they prioritise, “giving our designers a chance to display their wares and trusting their judgements and feeling”. They’re proud of the designers they represent, who produce, “beautiful products, and we see ourselves as a medium by which they can reach a greater audience and be enjoyed by people Australia wide”.
Ryans says that into the future they are keen to stock more local designs. “We know we produce great stuff right here at home and want to work with more designers and craftsmen locally. We are working closely with local Melbourne design firm Bent Design Studio to develop a range of furniture to meet the local markets demands and help keep the jobs here”.
The Parnham brothers are proud of having built their business from the ground up. “That initial phase is always tough” says Ryan. “We built up slowly, struggled from day to day… Our partners and suppliers put their faith in us and we worked hard for them to get their product to market. We now have a great range of suppliers, with great product and a host of loyal designers who we appreciate greatly”. Ryan says that for him, business is, “All about relationships and doing right. That’s how we have tried to build the business so far and we can hopefully continue to do so”.
